ask in Canada
Jenson Button concedes McLaren face
a "tricky" task to break their Q3 duck at the seventh attempt in 2015
at the Canadian GP, with team-mate Fernando Alonso simply expecting to qualify
"somewhere in the midfield".
The last race in Monaco represented
the first time that McLaren had finished in the points since their winter
reunion with Honda but the team had already warned against showing similar form
around the more power-hungry straights of Montreal ahead of Friday’s practice
sessions.
Although heavy rain showers in P2
meant the opening day's running was ultimately truncated, McLaren nonetheless
finished the session in 15th and 18th places respectively and Button, whose day
began with gearbox problems, says set-up work with the MP4-30 is still
required.
"From this morning's session,
we immediately knew we'd got a lot of work to do on set-up. However, now, I
think we know exactly what we have to do, and it’s already been put in
motion," the 2009 world champion said.
"There's a lot of work
required, but hopefully we’ll see the results of that tomorrow; I think we
will.
"I think qualifying in the top
10 tomorrow may be tricky, but you never know; we’ll see."
Honda, along with Ferrari, have
become the first manufacturers this season to spend some of their engine
development ‘tokens’ for this weekend, although the Japanese firm aren’t
expecting their improvements to be fully felt until the next race in Austria.
Alonso, who finished ninth in P1,
appeared happier with the handling of his car on Friday although was
circumspect with his expectations for the weekend.
"Overall, then, it’s been an
interesting Friday. We tried several things in FP1, all of which seemed to work
as we’d expected," he said.
"So far I am happy with the
balance of the car, and with the power delivered here, but the features of this
track don’t suit our package too well. We’re still several tenths behind to
where we want to be. Position-wise, we need to take a step forward, but that’s
going to be difficult to accomplish here.
"In tomorrow's qualifying
session, we therefore expect to end up somewhere in the midfield."
