Alonso: Formula 1 cars still fun to drive

Fernando Alonso says Formula 1 cars will still be fun to drive under the sport's new technical regulations.

This year, turbocharged V6 power units have been introduced alongside heavily-revised aerodynamics, with drivers getting their first taste of the new driving challenge at this week's opening pre-season test at Jerez.

Despite the changes, which look set to significantly raise lap times, Alonso is optimistic that he can still get enjoyment from the sport, arguing that being able to push to the limit is far more important than pure speed.

"The cars are slower," said the Ferrari driver, addressing the gathered media in the Jerez paddock. "I drove a lap here in the 1m16s in 2004 and now I'm driving at around 1m26, ten seconds slower than ten years ago.

"Physically, these cars are a lot easier. There are less g-forces and less speed around the corners. But, on the other hand, there are more parameters to control, more buttons on the steering wheel and more in terms of driving and having to control the car. It's just different. If I feel more or less emotion, it's still the same.

"When I drive in a go-kart I'm maybe twenty seconds or half a minute slower than in a Formula 1 car and I still sweat and enjoy it just as much. As long as you drive on the limit it doesn't matter how quick or slow the timed lap is; it doesn't change the emotion of the nice feeling of driving. The car is still fun to drive."
