Bath graduate Gemma Hatton meets Formula 1 hero Sebastian Vettel

A motorsport fan from Bath has met her hero as part of an industry placement. 

University of Bath undergraduate Gemma Hatton, 22, got to work with Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel during the yearlong stint with Nissan. 

Miss Hatton, who is studying mechanical engineering, was tasked with organising an event for Nissan Motorsport with Vettel. 

The triple world champion visited the Nissan European Technical Centre in Bedfordshire, which is working on development of a car being made in collaboration between the Japanese firm and US manufacturer Infiniti. Miss Hatton said: “Essentially, I was given the job of not only showing Sebastian what NTCE had to offer, but also making it as interactive and interesting as possible because the whole visit was being filmed.” 

The Nissan board of directors was so impressed by Miss Hatton’s effort that they took the unprecedented step of awarding her the Nissan Gold Award – usually only presented to company staff, for extremely high levels of attainment. 

Miss Hatton, who wants to be a race engineer, said: “I was really shocked and absolutely thrilled that the directors were so pleased with my work. I really enjoyed the project, and working with Nissan has opened so many doors and created so many great contacts for me in motor sport. 

She is now back in Bath for her final year, and contributing to the university’s Formula Student team and writing for Racecar Engineering magazine.
