Hidden emotions by Heikki Kulta

Hidden emotions

Steve and David Robertson, who still take care of Kimi's racing contracts, know their man so well that they see how much the win means for him [despite the understatement].

"When we heard David Coulthard asking Kimi in the podium interview what the win means for him, we had to laugh at his response that it didn't mean much. We know what he thinks and I can assure you that this win gives him a lot more satisfaction that many of his previous wins", Steve Robertson told Turun Sanomat.

"Kimi ranks this win very highly, because he knows that now he's shown all his doubters that he's still the same quick and flawless top driver that he was at the beginning of his career."

"It's quite similar to Spa 2009, which Kimi considers his greatest win. Looking at the two from the outside perspective, I put them on the same level. They were both so important for Kimi in their own ways. Both times Kimi showed that he can win in a car that's not the fastest. These wins came down to pure driver ability. He made the car produce the laps he needed to win."

"Spa 2009 and Abu Dhabi 2012 are Kimi's ways of lightening up a difficult season, when it takes a heck of a drive to win with the car you have. Kimi did this both times. Two years out of F1 haven't affected him at all."

I know what I'm doing

Did you believe Räikkönen could win during this season?

"He's had chances to win earlier in Barcelona and Hungary for example, but looking at the last 2-3 races, honestly I wasn't expecting it anymore. The car just didn't seem to have the performance", pondered Robertson. "But in this race Kimi showed why he's a world champion. As he told his engineers: I know what I'm doing!"

"Kimi's a real professional. He didn't put a foot wrong all weekend. When Fernando Alonso goes on the hunt, there's no opponent more dangerous on the track. That's when the pressure builds up — well, they don't call Kimi the Iceman for nothing. He's always been phenomenal when everything goes smoothly over a weekend."

Robertson points out that three years ago the atmosphere at Abu Dhabi was from another world.

"Kimi finished in 12th place, well behind the frontrunners. If somebody had predicted that he'd return three years later and win the race, would anyone have taken that seriously? We wouldn't have. This is huge for the team. The atmosphere is absolutely electric."

Beijinhos, Ludy
