Trulli: I understand the team’s decision

Jarno Trulli was gracious on Friday, with his Formula 1 career having ended as Caterham confirmed that he had been replaced for the 2012 season by Vitaly Petrov.

Trulli entered F1 in 1997 with Minardi, impressing immediately as he led the Austrian Grand Prix for Prost. After a stint with Jordan, victory came in the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix for Renault, and in 2005 he was a pole-sitter and regular front-runner for Toyota. The Caterham (then Lotus) switch came for 2010, although the Pescara man generally struggled to match the pace of team-mate Heikki Kovalainen and in 2011 continuously complained of the team’s power steering.

“I want to take this chance to thank Tony, Kamarudin, SM Nasarudin, Riad, Mike and everyone in the team for the two seasons we had together,” Trulli said on Friday. “From zero, we built up and established a solid F1 team. I'm really proud to have been part of it.

“I understand the decision the team has made and I want to wish to the whole team the very best of luck for the season ahead.”

"We have reached agreement with Jarno to bring an end to our partnership with him, but he will always be part of our family," explains Team Principal and CEO Tony Fernandes. "Now we want to integrate Vitaly as quickly as possible into the team and we will do everything we can to welcome him in, give him a car he can use to showcase his skills and keep up the rate of development that has seen us go from an empty factory with just four employees to a fully established Formula 1 team in just over two years."

The news means Formula 1 is left without an Italian driver for the first time in almost 40 years, as no Italian competed in a session at the 1973 German Grand Prix. It also confirms that half of the 2012 grid consists of former GP2 drivers.
