Jacques Villeneuve finished the opening round of the 2011/12 Andros Trophy in 10th place overall, after the first of seven events scheduled over the coming winter.
It was a challenging start to the season for the Škoda Racing team, who arrived in the French resort with a radically new Škoda Fabia and new technical and sporting collaboration with Team Oreca. Up against much more restrictive tyre regulations and changing track conditions, the team was certainly forced to hit the ground running. However, Villeneuve finished Saturday’s competition in 14th position, and moved up into the top ten on Sunday with a credible eighth place finish.
Speaking about the weekend, Villeneuve said: “For me, this event can be summed up as a test session. The base setup of the car didn’t suit me and I tried to do the same thing as my team-mates who adopted a more aggressive driving style, but that really didn’t work for me either. Thanks to successive setup changes which improved the car, I was able to drive in a smoother style as reflected in my results on the second day. I finished the first qualifying round in fifth position, just 0.06 seconds off fourth. The team made some additional tweaks and my Škoda become very competitive in the group race. Then I was really able to fight my corner, and the progress we’d made since the previous day gave my motivation a huge boast, so I’m really looking forward to the next race.”
Villeneuve and the Škoda Racing team will be back in action next weekend in Andorra on 9 and 10 December.
