Webber could lead Renault team in 2012
Red Bull driver Mark Webber has been linked with a shock move to lead the Renault team next year.
Although the energy drinks team insists it is “very happy” with Webber and the fact is his contract with Red Bull expires at the end of this year.
Renault team boss Eric Boullier admits he has spoken with Webber about moving to Renault, whose undisputed number one driver Robert Kubica is currently recovering from horror injuries sustained in a February rally crash and no one really knows if the Pole will make a full recovery to return to lead the team.
“I really like Mark and have known him for a long time,” Boullier said in Valencia.
Adding, “We have discussed it from time to time but we have never pushed him to ask what he wants to do because that decision is up to him.”
Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld are the current Renault drivers. The latter, who was drafted in to the team to substitute Kubica, has not delivered as was expected of him.
Webber is managed by Flavio Briatore, Renault’s former long time team boss.
Meanwhile we reported earlier that Red Bull boss Christian Horner was happy with their current driver line-up, amid rumours that Lewis Hamilton is flirting with move to the world champion team.
Horner said in Valencia: “We’re happy with the two drivers we’ve got.”
