Disappointment for Villeneuve on V8 debut
Jacques Villeneuve made an impressive start in his V8 Supercar debut on Saturday, but was eventually classified in 22nd after two first lap incidents cost the #55 Bottle-O Falcon team the result they had been looking for.
Starting from third on the grid, the 1997 Formula One World Champion got a good run down to the first chicane. Villeneuve was second on the approach to the apex, but a move down the outside by Ford Performance Racing’s Luke Youlden resulted in contact between the two cars, with Youlden brushing the wall.
Villeneuve continued but was tagged going into the next corner by Greg Ritter (Gary Rogers Motorsport Commodore). The #55 Bottle-O Falcon was spun around into the oncoming field, and Villeneuve was subsequently hit again.
Managing to get going amongst the chaos, the French-Canadian continued but the car was damaged and in need of repair. A trip to the pits was inevitable for the #55 team, and Villeneuve and team-mate Paul Dumbrell went eight laps down while the Ford Falcon was restored and sent back out onto the circuit.
“It is ultimately very disappointing,” said Villeneuve, “because we had a great qualifying and starting third we had a lot of potential for the race. I made a good start, and what happened on the run down to the first chicane was a racing incident. It was unfortunate, but then I got a tap going into the next corner and the car was broken.
“I’m looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow, and hopefully we’ll have an equally strong qualifying result from which to start the second race.”
Drivers and teams will return to the circuit on Sunday for the remaining half of this weekend’s unique event, with another qualifying session ahead of the second 300km race of the Armor All Gold Coast 600.
