Fernando Alonso called to meeting over race-fixing scandal, reports claim

Fernando Alonso has been ordered to appear at tomorrow's World Motor Sport Council meeting over the Formula One race-fixing scandal, according to reports. The latest development, which occurred on Friday, has come as a huge surprise to the double world champion who had assumed he would not be involved.

The hearing will examine claims that his Renault team arranged a crash during the Singapore grand prix last year so that he could win. His former team-mate, Nelson Piquet Jnr, is adamant that the instructions came from the team boss, Flavio Briatore, and the technical head, Pat Symonds.

Alonso has repeatedly denied that he had any knowledge about the origins of the crash, but Piquet's father, the triple world champion Nelson Piquet Jnr, insists the driver must have known. However Max Mosley, the FIA president, has previously maintained that Alonso would not be a part of their investigations. Briatore will be present at the meeting too, but Symonds will not.

There are suggestions that Alonso could be closely questioned over Briatore's role. The 59-year-old could be banned for life from the sport, while there is also a possibility he will not be allowed to manage Formula One drivers.

Briatore has protested his innocence, even after parting company with Renault on Wednesday, which he claimed was for the good of the team. However the French car company is unlikely to contest allegations at tomorrow's meeting.
